THE DESCENDENTS OF WILLIAM RENSSELAER BROOKS I

AND

JANE SIMMONS BROOKS

William Rensselaer BROOKS was born in New York State, probably in Sullivan County,  in 1821.  He died in the Civil War in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Jul 5, 1864. The New York State Adjutant General’s office Summary of Service shows he enlisted on Sep 21, 1862 at the age of 40 for three years. He mustered in on Oct 25, 1862.  A card on file in the office of the National Cemetery in Baton Rouge states that he died of typhoid fever in the United States General Hospital there and that he is buried in Section 9, grave number 503. He was a member of Company E, 161st Regiment, New York State Volunteers.  [NOTE:  The father of William Rensselaer BROOKS I may have been James BROOKS.  Additional information will be included in future revisions if confirmation is obtained.]

Jane SIMMONS was born in Richford, New York, in 1828, and died on Sep 17, 1906 of chronic bronchitis and old age. She was buried on Sep 19. 1906. This is confirmed in the records of the town of Woodhull, Steuben, New York. These records also state that she was 78 years old at the time of death, but does not give a birth date. I do not believe this to be the correct age. Jane's parents were John SIMMONS and Louisa HASKINS. Jane is buried in the Woodhull Village Cemetery (Woodhull Rural Cemetery). Go to the ‘unused’ gate and one row from the side. She is buried in an unmarked grave.

Jane remarried twice after the death of William:

Abraham FREELAND on April 27, 1867 or 1868.  In Jane's words "I was divorced from him about the year 1871 on the grounds he had a living wife when I married him which I knew nothing about at the time.

James BOLDMAN in the fall of 1874.  (Died May 14, 1891)  In Jane's words "Boldman and myself did not live together for the last five years prior to his death for the reason we were old and unable to take care of ourselfs.  he going to live with his children and I with mine."

William R. BROOKS and Jane SIMMONS were married in Dryden, New York on Nov 21 (or 22nd) 1844 by Mr. BROWN, Justice of the Peace. In Jane's words, "There is no record of the marriage).  The following information regarding their children and families is accurate and can be verified.

WARNER).  Marion was in the Civil War, and fought at Harper’s Ferry. He enlisted in Company F, 1stCavRegtNY (Lincoln Calvary) on Aug 25, 1864. Mustered out at Alexandria, VA June 6, 1865. Marion received a pension related to his service in the Civil War based on a bout with typhoid fever, rheumatism, blood poisoning, skin problems, a liver condition, and a heart condition (Greatly disabled).  Marion and Eugenia are both buried in the Woodhull Village Cemetery (Woodhull Rural Cemetery). I am inserting here a story about William R. BROOKS II. The details are known by both Wilda BROOKS SAYRE and I. We disagree on one point, which I will mention later.

In 1932, a woman by the name of Ella Mary TAGGART RUMSEY came to our home in Woodhull, New York. After sending my brother Bob and I outside, the subject of her visit was explained. Of course, Bob and I went around and sneaked back into the kitchen where we heard the whole discussion. Ella, as I will use hereafter, had been to see a Frank PARKS, then Woodhull Town Clerk. She was looking for her father. Mr. PARKS told her that he could not tell her who her father was, but for her to go see Will BROOKS and he could tell her. Will was reluctant to do so, but eventually admitted that he was Ella's father. We later learned that, at the age of 17 or 18, he was involved with a girl by the name of Caroline EDWARDS. As I remember the story, he married her. Wilda SAYRE thinks that he did not marry her. However, she was pregnant. Her folks separated them and she was taken away from Woodhull. My father, William R., never saw her again, nor had he seen Ella until that day.

Ella's mother (Caroline) eventually married a man by the name of TAGART and Ella never knew any other father.

Ella married Frank RUMSEY, raised her family and shortly before her death Ella's mother told her daughter the story and made her promise she would find her father, which she did.

From that year, 1932, until he died in 1937, he kept in contact with her. Frank RUMSEY was a professional broom maker. They had three children, Richard RUMSEY, John RUMSEY and Agnes RUMSEY. I went to their home often. Ella attended her father's funeral in 1937 and even after that I went to their home. For a while, they were in Waverly, New York, and then Cortland, New York. I contacted Ella's grandson in 1989. Frank and Ella are dead as well as their three children. The RUMSEY Hand Made Broom company is still in existance in Cortland.

Caroline is buried at Groton, NY.

Now that you know the story, lets continue with William R II.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The information included in this part was originally provided with the assistance of Wilda Brooks Sayre, Zitell Elsie Rogers Brooks, Robert Hughes, Martha Isabelle Coulter Brooks, Donald Rexford Brooks, Rita Marie Lavitola Brooks, and numerous others in the family. Since the original issue in 1988, I have been able to find additional information; some of which has been added here, along with several corrections. Again, a very special thanks to Jean Hazel Reagle Brooks, who has done so much to make this venture presentable and, hopefully, successful.

I cannot forget one other. She is Mrs. Edward Andrews, a historian in her own right. She is Kathryn Mason Andrews, a niece of Harold Mason who married my second cousin, Stella Calhoun. Nancy and I spent the greater part of an afternoon in her home and office. The information about the Brooks, Calhoun, Colvin and Simmons families has been invaluable in this presentation. Thank you Mrs. Andrews.

A special thanks is also due to Jeff Smith of the H. P. Smith Funeral Home, and Mrs. Ken Symonds for their assistance. All of these are in Woodhull, New York.
