JENNIE (JANE) ENSIGN BROOKS
Through his research, William Malcolm BROOKS determined a portion of this line.
Ronald HUGHES corresponded with Scott D. ENSIGN, a senior at the University of Michigan during September of 2000. Scott made reference to a book that he had access to called "Ensigns in America", compiled and published by Martha Eunice ENSIGN NELSON. Scott also mentioned that most ENSIGNs can trace their line back to James ENSIGN, who came from Scotland in 1632. Scot’s line is James, David, David, Datus, Datus, Seymour, Hiram, Marshall, Daniel, Clarence, Richard.
Ronald found "Ensigns in America" on-line in a searchable, digitized format. Large portions of the following were taken from the book. Numerous errors were noted (typographical, spelling, dates, etc.)
Ronald also received a published report called "Record of the Descendants of James Ensign and his Wife Sarah Elson". Although our line of the Ensigns cannot be linked to James and Sarah, the report included information pertaining to Torrison (or Torreson) de Los ENSIGN, grandfather of Jennie (Jane) Mable ENSIGN BROOKS.
Additional information was obtained through the internet from the LDS Genealogy Site. (call numbers 1985508, 198544, 1903890, 456400, 2034840, 1903984). Census data were also used.
Conflicting information was obtained from the various sources . Apparently, very little was verified from primary sources. See "The Ensign Mess" for additional information
With all that in mind, here’s what we now have:

Torrison delos ENSIGN (born Abt. 1810 in NY State, possibly Dansville, Livingston, NY.) (died Abt. 1865) (buried in Dansville, Livingston, NY). ("Ensigns in America" states that Torrison was born in England, as was his father, and that his mother was from Ireland; however, the 1860 census indicates he was born in New York State). Torrison married Sarah NICHOLS (born Jun 13, 1815) Abt. 1835 in Dansville, Livingston, NY. "Ensigns in America" states that he was also married to Mary MUNCY (born in 1813 in Dansville, NY, or in Ireland) at one time. The 1860 census shows Torrison ENSIGN and his family, including wife Sarah, living in Dansville, Livingston, NY. The assumption is that Sarah is the mother of Torrison's children. NOTE: Ron Hughes has extensive history pertaining to the family of Sarah NICHOLS.
| The 1880 census shows Sarah WEBSTER

A Passage Provided by Jennie M. BROOKS to ‘Ensigns in America’ in 1952 Remembrances by Floyd MEAD, Son of Minnie Irene ENSIGN MEAD In the Army, Brace [William Brace ENSIGN] was known as Brace, and he served in the Civil War, as did his wife, Mary, who was a nurse. She was dark complexioned, small and beautiful. She served white and black alike, and had a multitude of friends who dubbed her "Angel." When you think of this lovely woman, giving birth to 13 children, many of them being born during a brutal war, she is to be truly respected and loved. Brace was quite heavy and chubby, a good mixer in any company; one to be trusted with big assignments. He soon advanced from a drummer boy to second in command, and was captured by a band of plunderers and robbers who took from North and South alike. He made his escape and came to a camp of Northerners, where he became a messenger for the General, and then a guard at prison camps where he remained until the end of the war. One of his sayings was, "Between my apple cider and ideas, we have something to look forward to" |
| A review of William Brace ENSIGN’s civil war records would dispute several of the comments made by Floyd. In addition, none of their children were born during the war years. |
